Audit

The Audit Department (AD) is responsible for providing an independent opinion to the Audit Committee on the design and operation of controls within the organisation. The objective of the Audit Department is to provide reasonable assurance to the Board, Management and other stakeholders that an effective internal control environment has been established within the Bank.

Communications

The Communications department is responsible for driving SMBC’s storytelling across both internal and external communications channels throughout the EMEA region, to support and promote the bank’s commercial activities, profile and causes.

Compliance

The Compliance Group assists SMBC Group in setting its risk appetite relating to compliance risks and providing reasonable assurance that the risk preferences and tolerances relating to compliance are observed and maintained. Tracking, analysing and reporting on conduct and compliance is an essential function to ensure that SMBC Group is meeting regulatory expectations in complying with the complex laws, rules and regulations which apply across the banking business

Corporate Banking Department 2

Corporate Banking Department 2 (CBD2) is responsible for developing and maintaining client relationship with mainly investment grade clients and selectively sub investment grade clients at Western Europe across various sectors. CBD2 provides relationship management, credit analysis, solution marketing, operations and support.

Finance

The EMEA Finance & Control department comprises of approximately 120 staff and is responsible for financial and regulatory reporting as well as tax compliance, planning and advice for all SMBC Group entities in Banking and Securities Division operations in the EMEA Region. There are four teams within Finance: Regulatory Reporting, Transformation and Analytics, Tax and Financial Control.

Financial Markets Department

The Financial Markets Department (FMD) are responsible for the management and operations of multiple Treasury related products including FX and Money Markets whilst providing a comprehensive service to the Banks customer base and supporting Front Office business.

The Financial Markets Departments comprises of 4 different Desks, Planning, Customer Sales, Trading and Banking, it is envisaged, the candidate over the placement period will be given an opportunity to learn about the functions of a few of the different desks in FMD giving a good insight into a functioning Treasury Department.

Global Financial Institutions Group

Global Financial Institutions Group looks after the relationship management for financial clients of SMBC group. GFIG is a global department with offices in New York, Tokyo, Sydney, among others, in addition to London. GFIG (London) is made up of four teams, Banks, NBFI, Structuring and Analytics, and Planning and Know Your Client.

Global Markets

SMBC Nikko Capital Markets provides specialist investment banking services, expert insights and innovative solutions in global capital markets. It provides customers with market analysis and research, broking and trading in primary and secondary debt and equity securities, advisory services on mergers and acquisitions, and marketing and trading an extensive range of over-the-counter derivative contracts. Candidates over the placement period will have the opportunity to rotate around desks including Fixed Income and Equities.

Global Trade Finance

The  Global Trade Finance Department (GTFD) specialises in bespoke financing structures, helping customers from across the world to achieve their liquidity needs, mitigate risk, and meet their financial goals.

Human Resources

The Human Resources (HR) Department is responsible for developing and implementing the people management strategy, policies, and systems for EMEA. The function delivers a range of key services including recruitment, learning and development, payroll, benefits, pensions, employee relations, immigration, international mobility, HR analytics, remuneration, talent management, succession planning and many more. As a placement student you will rotate around four key teams; Talent Acquisition, Work force administration, Employee Relations and Diversity and Inclusion.

International and structured finance Department

The International and Structured Finance department (ISD) works on project finance deals across the globe even as far as the Middle East. With a market leading team, the projects range from a new rail line across London, an offshore windfarm powering millions of homes, a new hospital, affordable housing for inner city residents or leading the support for hydrogen for clean energy.

Leasing

Within SMBC, the leasing business is an important product group providing solutions to the bank’s client base. Within EMEA the team manages all aspects of its portfolio from sourcing, winning and closing deals to then providing all support services to manage the portfolio, e.g. finance, operations, credit monitoring, compliance and risk.

Loan Capital Markets

Loan Capital Markets is the SMBC’s interface between our customers and the financial markets and plays a leading role in structuring, pricing, advising, executing, and syndicating multi-lender corporate loan facilities.

Operations

Operations London is the central hub for all the booking and processing of transactions for and on behalf of a number of SMBC Group entities and is widely supported by offices across EMEA region. OAD is responsible for a broad array of functions including trade finance, financial crime (KYC), payments, customer service and control, treasury, Loans administration, derivatives, and credit limit control.

Project Management Office

The primary focus of the Project Management Office (PMO) is to deliver change and transformation across the Group. This is achieved by Project Managers working closely with people in various departments to help plan, manage and deliver projects.

Risk Management Department

The Risk Management Department is a second line of defence function that works with all other departments to ensure that the group can do business safely. RMD facilitates this by ensuring the appropriate risk strategies are in place to identify risks and implement the controls necessary to meet regulatory expectations.

Specialised Products Department

The Specialised Products Department has four separate businesses:  Leveraged finance, Securitisation, Real Estate and Subscription Finance. The department covers, Origination (e.g. research/support in the credit application process, client on boarding, due diligence), Deal execution (e.g. loan settlement, internal approvals), Portfolio (e.g. monthly/quarterly transaction monitoring reports) and analytical support on potential new transactions

Securities Integration

The Strategic Planning department’s Unity programme is a large-scale transformation programme looking to enhance SMBC’s capability and competitiveness in EMEA. As part of this team you will gain a fundamental understanding of transformation programmes, the change and communications process, strategy and culture.

Transportation Department

TPD is a department operating globally using SMBC’s wider networks, servicing aviation and maritime customers’ financing needs by providing asset backed loans, foreign exchange, interest rate swaps and access to capital markets through SMBC Nikko.
